End of book

Overall I liked this book. Unlike any other English class book I actually finished Gym Candy. It was a good story that made me keep reading it. Another reason I liked it was because it was a sports story and I could relate to it. I would recommend it to anyone because it has a storyline of what happens when you take steroids.

...

If I could change a part of this book it would be that... well it is a good enough book that I wouldn't want to or know what to change.

Summary

I have finished the book Gym Candy. It is about Mick Johnson, a sophomore, at a high school in California. He is the starting running back as a freshmen, but is stop short of the goal line in a big game. That is when he realizes he needs to get stronger and starts lifting weights. Soon he isn't getting stronger and gets a membership at Popeye's, a local gym, and starts to work out there. There at Popeye's he is offered steroids but doesn't want to take them.

Once football starts there is a new freshmen running back who could take Mick's starting spot. So when he goes back to Popeye's he starts to use the drug D-bol. Mick starts to get stronger and soon is one of the best players in the state. The side effects of the drug kick in and makes him stop taking it. Once he gets back on he decides its not working good enough so he starts to take different kinds of steroids. Soon his friends start to wonder how hes getting so big.

Then Micks friends finds the steroids and talks to Mick about them. They go to the beach where Mick pulls out a gun and tries to shoot himself. Luckily he misses and only takes off a piece of his scalp.

At the hospital Mick talks to a police officer and his trainer at Popeye's goes to jail. Mick then gets help at a facility where he stays for the next month.

This book is located in California, close to where Mick's dad got a football scholarship (He played at Washington). It is in the middle-class part of town, though they do have some money that Mick uses to buy steroids. I don't really know what the time period is but it is most likely in the present as their using present things.

The main character of the story is Mick Johnson. He is not really directly described but from how the author indirectly describes him he is your small, quick, agile running back. He is not really muscular and is now starting to try protein supplements to get bigger.

Mick's dad is Mike Johnson. The author directly describes him as "bigger and stronger than any other dad. His voice deeper, his smile wider, his laugh louder. Like me (Mick) he has red hair, only his was way long and reached his shoulders. He wore muscle T-shirts that showed his tattoos -- on one shoulder a dragon, on the other a snake.

Gym Candy...1

The title of the book is Gym Candy. I chose this book because it looked like a good football story. It is also an Iowa's Teen Choice award for 2009-10. It is about a kid who loves football and his dad was a great running back at Washington.
